History:

By and large, there is very little to distinguish the Pre-Crisis Earth-One Robin from his Post-Crisis New Earth counterpart. They both share similar origins, though modern retellings of Robin's origin has added substantial bits of information that was not revealed in the original stories. (Batman: Year Three and Robin: Year One).

Dick Grayson was a young aerialist for the Flying Graysons until the night his parents were murdered by a gangster named Boss Zucco. Bruce Wayne, who witnessed the Graysons' murder, took young Dick in as his ward and soon after he became Batman's partner, Robin the Boy Wonder.

Presumably, many of Robin's earliest Silver Age adventures are no longer considered part of continuity, particularly his pseudo-partnership with Bette Kane, who once dressed in a similar costume to Robin but called herself Batgirl. In modern continuity, Bette Kane never adopted the Batgirl identity, and the name was not used until 1967 with the introduction of Barbara Gordon. The Earth-One Robin also shared in several adventures with Bat-Mite, a pesky imp from another dimension. Bat-Mite has since been excised from canon continuity and Robin's association with him is now considered apocryphal.

One of the most significant differences between the many versions of the character is that the Earth-One Robin was never fired as Batman's partner. Their partnership dissolved slowly over the course of several years. The Dynamic Duo began sharing in fewer adventures with one another when Robin began devoting more time to the Teen Titans. When he was old enough, Dick Grayson went away to college at Hudson University, and the partnership was permanently dissolved. Batman even stopped living at Wayne Manor at this time and began living out of the penthouse suite at the Wayne Foundation.

In Post-Crisis continuity, the Batman fired Dick Grayson as his partner due to his recklessness as first revealed in Batman #408. The details behind this incident were re-imagined in the Nightwing: Year One four-part story-arc.

Surprisingly, Robin’s adventures with the original Teen Titans are considered canon in both Earth-One and New Earth continuity. Secret Origins Annual #3 retells the first meeting of the Teen Titans and is very similar to the original story presented in Brave and the Bold #54. Following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, DC Comics continuity was re-structured and large portions of Robin's published history may no longer be considered authoritative.
