History

The Nautilus was a custom-designed submarine designed and constructed in the mid 19th century by the Sikh pirate Captain Nemo. Its parts were built to order in Le Creusot, London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Paris, Prussia (Krupp), Motala Sweden (Motala Verkstad), New York, etc. Then the pieces were assembled by Nemo's men on a deserted island. The Nautilus was double hulled, and was further separated into water-tight compartments. Its top speed was 50 knots. Its displacement was 1356.48 French freight tons immerged (1507 submerged). Electricity provided by sodium/mercury batteries (with the sodium provided by extraction from seawater) was the craft's primary power source for propulsion and other services. The Nautilus had tentacles that rested along the sides, which could be used to grab objects and bore the likeness of a Sperm Whale battling a giant Squid.

Captain Nemo built the Nautilus on a deserted island in the South Pacific. As Captain of the Nautilus, Nemo divorced himself from society and became known as a "science pirate", and a scourge of the high seas. Although seemingly destroyed by a volcanic eruption, Nemo and the Nautilus resurfaced years later. In June of 1898, Nemo responded to a request by British Secret Service to become part of a "menagerie" of special agents acting in defense of the British Empire. Although Nemo despised the British, he agreed to lend his services to the crown and the Nautilus became a de facto base of operations for this "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen".

Notes

  • It is fair to assume that the comic book version of the Nautilus shares the same dimensions, amenities and history as its literary counterpart. There is some cause for confusion however regarding the continuity of Verne's Nemo and Nautilus. The second novel Mysterious Island resulted in the death of Nemo and the destruction of the Nautilus. This story took place during the American Civil War, several years prior to the events of Verne's first Nemo novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
  • There is some discrepancy concerning whether the Nautilus as seen in the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen titles is the same vessel featured in Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Mysterious Island. In League of Extraordinary Gentlemen #1, Captain Nemo states that his ship miraculously survived its perceived destruction in Mysterious Island, however artist Kevin O'Neill later confirmed that this is in fact intended to be the Nautilus II, built to replace the original from Verne's novels.
  • The Nautilus was also featured in the 2003 League of Extraordinary Gentlemen feature film.

Trivia

  • Writer Jules Verne named the Nautilus after the actual Nautilus 1800, invented by Robert Fulton.
