Synopsis: In the seedy back alleys of Denver, Colorado, a mechanical insect attacks a homeless man. Two police officers arrive on the scene to investigate, but they discover that the robot bug has killed the man, and replaced his head with its own body, which it now controls. This "Headman" proceeds to attack the police officers.

Later, Detective John Jones is called onto the scene to investigate these bizarre murders. Jones uses his Martian powers to gather as much information as possible, and later sets a trap for the Headmen. A second Headman drone attacks what it believes is another bum living in an alley. The bum however, is actually the Martian Manhunter in disguise and he attacks the drone. He succeeds in destroying it with his Martian Vision, but suffers severe eye damage in the process.

The Manhunter retires to the JLA Watchtower for a brief convalescence. He consults with Steel and Oracle concerning his recent experiences, and discovers that a scientist named Thaddeus Hoskins has pioneered a cybernetic process that transforms humans into robotic slaves – the Headmen.

J'onn returns to Denver where he tracks Hoskins (now calling himself the Headmaster) to an underground silo. The Headmaster has been using his drone labor force to build a tremendous space vessel. It is his intent to save humanity from potential global catastrophe by ferrying them into outer space aboard a series of colony ships. The Martian Manhunter fights with the Headmaster and causes enough structural damage in the silo that the entire facility collapses, burying the Headmaster and his Headmen.

Notes

Trivia

  • This issue establishes that a year's worth of time passed between the point when J'onn first came to Earth, and when he first assumed the alias of John Jones.
