Hawkwoman/Hawkgirl was originally conceived as a single character, but DC's publishing history has created a continuity quagmire in relation to Hawkwoman and her partner/husband, Hawkman. The original Hawkwoman was Shayera Hol - a police officer from Thanagar, who appeared during the height of the Silver Age era. Following the Hawkworld limited series however, it was established that the Hawks did not arrive on Earth until after publishing year 1993, despite the fact that they have made hundreds of appearances prior to that. Shayera Thal (of Hawkworld continuity) bears many similar aspects to her Silver Age predecessor, but was not an associate of the Justice League of America, nor did was she based out of Midway City. Shayera Thal's appearance effectively made all prior Hawkwoman appearances apocryphal. In order to explain who exactly it was flying around with Hawkman during the 60s, 70s, and 80s, DC Comics created the character of Hawkwoman (Sharon Parker Hall), and retroactively inserted her into the Silver Age history, replacing Shayera Hol altogether.

Hawkgirl as she appears in most modern DC Comics.
