History
Doc Savage's father, Clark Savage Senior planned to raise his son to be a superhuman though intensive training and education. He initially was assisted in this by his friend Dr. Gunter Asch, a German national. When Clark Jr. was 7 years old, Dr Asch had a falling out with Clark Sr. Dr. Asch absconded with much of the research data they had collected during the project and used it to develop his own superhuman training program.
Doc Savage served in the Great War (World War I) as a fighter pilot. He was captured and taken toe a prison camp called Loki. There he met up with the five men who would become his life long friends. He also met Dr. Asch again and Asch's protege, an orphan whom he had renamed Siegfried. Asch tried to have Doc executed, but Doc and his friends escaped from the camp instead. Doc and Siegfried confronted each other, fought to a draw. Dr. Asch was injured in an explosion during the escape and was thereafter confined to a wheelchair.
In 1936 during the Olympic games held in Berlin, Doc Savage confronted Dr. Asch and Siegfried again. Doc defeated Siegfried in hand to hand combat and in disgust, Asch killed him. By doing so, Siegfried fell back on him and Asch himself was killed.
