History

Blüdhaven is a highly populated city located not very far from Gotham City. For a while, it served as the base of operations for the vigilante super-hero Nightwing. It was also the home of retired All-Star Squadron member Jonathan Law, the original Tarantula, as well as the new Tarantula - Catalina Flores. During the Infinite Crisis, Blüdhaven was the sight of a massive attack by the Secret Society of Super-Villains. The Society dropped a quasi-sentient vat of deadly radioactive chemicals (colloquially known as "Chemo") onto the city, causing widespread destruction and mayhem. [1] Many of Earth's heroes came to Blüdhaven's defense in a bitter struggle to save as many lives as possible. The disaster proved so massive that U.S. President Jonathan Horne placed the entire city under quarantine. A new government-sanctioned super team code-named "Freedom's Ring" took charge of Blüdhaven, and ordered all remaining metahumans to leave the city. [2]

Blüdhaven later became the target of interest for an artificial intelligence known as Brother Eye. Brother Eye was alerted about residual activities in Blüdhaven and reactivated its offensive protocols. Creating a new army of OMAC cyborgs, it took control of the city. The Atomic Knights and the time-displaced Karate Kid and his colleague Una were present during the OMAC attack. Una was assimilated by Brother Eye's programming and was transformed into an OMAC. Brother Eye, having upgraded itself with technology from Apokolips, activated a Boom Tube to travel to Apokolips, where it began transfiguring the natives there in a cosmic game between Darkseid and the Monitor Solomon. [3]

Recently, following the events of Identity Crisis, Timothy Drake (New Earth), the third Robin had moved to Blüdhaven in hopes of escaping his father, Jack Drake (New Earth), and Stephanie Brown (New Earth)'s deaths. Once he moved there, also in hopes of not becoming like Batman, he became embroiled in a plot set by the Penguin. Robin was beaten by Shrike but the new Batgirl, Cassandra Cain (New Earth) came to his assistance, also aiding him in an attack against the Penguin. Both Robin and Batgirl were caught by the Penguin thanks to sleeping gas. Robin and Batgirl were forced to fight and Robin even shot Batgirl, but it was part of Robin's plan to help them escape from the Penguin's house.

In Batgirl: Kicking Assassins , Robin is not viewed but Cassandra is shown setting up shop in Blüdhaven. She get's her own Batcave and is attacked by Deathstroke and his daughter Ravager, Rose Wilson (New Earth). She defeats the two assassins and carries on living in Blüdhaven.

Trivia

  • Blüdhaven has been mentioned several times throughout the course of the Birds of Prey television series, but was never actually shown in any episode.
  • When Blüdhaven was bombed by Chemo (New Earth), Batman watched it happen while fighting Jason Todd, who had become Red Hood. This fight and bombing was watched by Joker, who had been captured by Jason, to exact revenge upon the man who had "killed" him.
