History
David Clinton, also known as Chronos the Time Thief once attempted to purloin the utility belt of the super-hero, Batman. During this incident however, he found himself crossing swords with not only Batman, but his Justice League allies, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern as well. Having designed a harness that could transmit matter through the time stream, Clinton evaded capture by sending himself backwards to the year 1879. The Justice League members piggybacked on Clinton’s wake and arrived in the town of Elkhorn on June 12th of that same year.
However, when they arrived they found no sign of Chronos. Apparently, Clinton arrived in Elkhorn at an even earlier date, and had time to make an effective getaway. His escape was short lived however, as a local gang leader named Tobias Manning stole Clinton's time travel technology and arranged to have him placed in prison.
While attempting to assimilate into the 19th century culture, the displaced Leaguers came upon a rowdy gambler known as Bat Lash. They were surprised to learn that Bat Lash had been involved in a barroom fracas with an outlaw sporting bizarre futuristic weaponry. When everything settled down, Lash was arrested and placed inside of a prison cell next to Clinton.
The Justice League broke into the jailhouse to apprehend Clinton and set Bat Lash free as well. While attempting to escape from Elkhorn, they ran directly into Tobias Manning and his laser gun wielding cohorts. Fortunately for the League, they found aid from several other notorious gunfighters. The town sheriff, Ohiyesa “Pow-Wow” Smith, recruited Jonah Hex and El Diablo, and together with the displaced League members, formed the Justice Rangers.
The Justice Rangers tracked Manning back to his ranch to discover that he was now in possession of several large, giant robots from the future. Combining their various skills and weapons, the Rangers managed to destroy the robots and apprehend Tobias’ men. Sheriff Smith had a personal Showdown with Manning and managed to defeat him, reasserting his authority as Sheriff of Elkhorn.
Soon after this event, Chronos reclaimed his time travel equipment and escaped into the far-distant future. The 21st century Justice League members departed from their new Justice Ranger allies, and pursued Chronos through the time stream.
Bat Lash, El Diablo, Jonah Hex and Pow-Wow Smith went their separate ways, but Smith remained behind in Elkhorn to maintain law and order.

Notes
- The existence of the Justice Rangers is exclusive to the continuity of DC's animated projects.
- In the mainstream reality, members of the Justice League of America have traveled back in time to meet various 19th century gun fighters from time to time, but they have never before formed an official team.
- A parallel to this team exists in the 52 multiverse on Earth-18 where the Justice League exists in a current world that reflects the 1880s of the readers' reality.
